Accessibility

Every time the site is built, an automated accessibility check runs over the home page, the law index and a province page, the guides, pricing, about, how it works, news, the card and Scout pages, the changelog, privacy, log in, sign up, and the signed-in dashboard. It checks the WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 A and AA rules that can be checked by machine. As of the last run, none of those pages had a detectable violation.

Three further checks run at the same time:

• every colour pair in the design meets its contrast target, read from the stylesheet rather than from a list someone maintains by hand;
• the skip link is the first thing the keyboard reaches, and it reaches the content;
• every page has exactly one main landmark and one level-one heading, and focus is visible wherever it lands.

• Full keyboard operation, with a visible focus outline everywhere.
• Motion respects your system setting. If you have asked your device to reduce motion, the animation on the home page renders in its final state instead of moving.
• Text at AAA contrast on body copy, above the AA floor.
• Text resizes and reflows; nothing is a picture of words.
• No time limits, no automatic carousels, nothing that moves while you read it.

These are the honest ones. Each will be updated here as it is closed.

• No screen reader walk-through has been done yet. Automated checks catch perhaps half of what matters. They cannot tell you whether a label makes sense read aloud, or whether a page reads in a sensible order. A pass with VoiceOver and NVDA is outstanding, and until it is done this statement rests on automated results and keyboard testing only.
• The card PDF is not a tagged PDF. The card you download is laid out as a graphic, so a screen reader will not read its fields in order. Everything on the card is also on your dog’s page in this site, as ordinary text, which is accessible — but the file itself is not.
• No testing with assistive technology users. Nothing here has been tested by people who use screen readers, switch access or voice control daily. That is the test that actually counts, and it has not happened.
• English only. There is no French version, which matters for a Canadian site and particularly in New Brunswick and Quebec.

Please tell us — it is the fastest way for this list to get shorter. Contact us and say what page you were on, what you were trying to do, and what happened instead. If you use a screen reader, switch access, voice control or magnification, saying which one and which browser helps a great deal, but do not let not knowing stop you from writing.

If something on this site is blocking you from getting to your own record, say so and we will treat it as urgent rather than as a bug report.
